Are you a young entrepreneur who has to do all work related tasks from home, and have no idea how to achieve balance between work life and personal life?
Do you feel guilty about not having enough time to do the things you love or the things that are important to you because you spend all your time working?
In this blogpost, we’re going to be talking about the concept of balance and I would give you a few tips on how exactly to balance work and personal life.
THE CONCEPT OF BALANCE
Let us first understand what the word balance means…
According to the dictionary:
‘Balance is an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright or steady’
There are 4 things we try to balance as humans.
These 4 things are:
- Work
- Health
- Relationship, and
- Hobbies
According to the definition of balance from the dictionary, balance would mean trying to carry out the 4 parts of our lives in equal proportions.
But we are humans; Our minds are constantly roaming.
While you’re sitting at your desk, you’re remembering the email you’ve not responded to, the chores you’ve not attended to, what you’re going to eat, how to meet up with the deadline your client gave you and many other things that need your attention
We’re not robots that can stick to a routine for as long as they’re asked to,
So we can’t balance our work, health, relationships and hobbies in equal measures.
The kind of ‘balance’ you should strive to achieve as an entrepreneur is:
Managing all aspects of your life in ways that keep your energy flowing and keeps your mind and body; healthy and content.
This doesn’t necessarily mean carrying out your life’s activities in equal measures.
And yes, if you fail to balance your work and personal life, you may end up suffering from any of these:
- An increased level of stress and stress related illnesses
- Lower life satisfaction
- Feelings of depression
- Lower productivity and
- Damaged relationships
And you definitely don’t want any of these so here are some helpful tips on how to draw the line between work and personal life:
Helpful Tips On How To Balance Work Life And Personal Life
1. Personally define balance
The first thing you need to do is to know your definition of balance.
Design your life so that nobody else designs it on your behalf because, the problem of feeling like you’re living an imbalanced life starts from the definition of balance others are creating for you with the things you hear them say, for instance:
“I put my family first everytime”,
“I’m always home before 6pm”,
“I go to the gym 4 times a week, despite my tight schedule” etc.
And then, you start to feel guilty that you aren’t doing these things they boast about.
So, the best way to combat this is to determine your priorities and personally define balance so the next time you hear people say things like these, you won’t feel guilty about the way you’ve chosen to live your life.
2. Eliminate the Scarcity Mindset
Stop feeling like you have to always let go of something that matters to you to get another important thing done every time.
For instance; stop saying:
“I can’t spend time with my family because I have to go to the office” or
“If I go out with my family, I won’t have enough time to go to the gym” and things like these.
With the right schedule, you can have enough time to do the things that matter to you.
Instead, watch out for low value activities and time fillers that take a big chunk out of your time daily and cut them off and they could include procrastination, playing games, mindlessly scrolling through social media, and so on.
3. Set Boundaries Between Work and Everything Else:
If you get to decide your time for work, try to create a daily timetable for yourself.
Choose the time of the day that you dedicate to work and use it intensely.
Also create a workspace for yourself inside your home. It could be a separate room entirely, or a corner in your room consisting of a table and chair.
Mentally, it helps you separate work time from leisure time and in turn, making you more productive at work.
Also don’t forget to take breaks while you work. It helps improve your health and you’ll find it easier to concentrate on the tasks you have at hand.
4. Prioritise your Health:
Young people sometimes get caught up with work and other activities that require attention and end up neglecting their health; don’t be one of them.
Eat healthy, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and get a reasonable amount of sleep.
Always remember that if your health suffers, your goals will suffer so, do all you can to remain fit.
In conclusion,
Attaining balance between work and personal life is possible when you truly understand the concept of work and personal life balance.
Maintaining balance helps you feel more in control of your life and everything else surrounding it.
With the right amounts of discipline and commitment, your life will begin to feel balanced just the way you want it.
